Born from Stone - Lahir dari Batu | 200 x 73 x 15 cm | pencil on paper, installation with digital print, canvas and stone | Yogyakarta | 2021

In ancient civilizations, it is believed that the stones have witnessed the spectacle of life long before the existence of humankind, making them the collectors of the memory of life cycles. They carry memories just like humans do and the layers of information that are accessible to humans, help revealing the stories of our past or more precisely from their past.

There is a legend about the story of the first human on the Indonesian island Sulawesi, which I visited and I got inspired to complete this project. They say the first human was born out of stone, was a woman and her name was Karema. The meaning of this legend gave a twist in my thoughts. The stone as an element with memorial properties, strong, alive and patient, carrying information about the past and even if it brakes by the time will reborn from its own dust. A meaning about courage, strength and wisdom.

“Every man carries within him, unconsciously
the memory of ancient civilizations

Similarly, the stone
is the fragment of
the World’s memory.”

Carl Gustav Jung, Memories
